What we Know About the New Scooby-Doo Movie

A new Scooby-Doo movie has been announced to release in the spring of 2020 according to ComicYears.com. Fans have loved the detective dog and Mystery Inc. ever since Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! premiered as a Saturday morning cartoon in 1969.

This was an incredibly successful TV series for three seasons and eventually, the Mystery Inc gang made it to the big screen not once, but twice. Now, there are talks of not only a new movie, but other related projects as well.

The Scooby-Doo Phenomenon

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! was just the beginning for everyone’s favorite crime sniffing dog. The series, which began its run as an animated cartoon in 1969 followed a dog named Scooby-Doo and his friends (Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy), the Mystery Inc. gang, who solved crimes and faced eerie characters and monsters.

The series featured many great one liners (like “Scooby-dooby-doo! and “rut-roh Raggy”) but the one that is probably the most well-known is what the villain would say at the end of every episode after the Mystery Inc. gang solved the crime, “…and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn’t been for you meddling kids!”

The original animated Scooby series only aired for three seasons; however, through the years, there have been many reboots, including two big screen live action films in the early 2000s.

Live Action Versions

Scooby-Doo was one of the first animated series or movies to receive the live action treatment in the 2000s. Scooby-Doo: The Movie was released in 2002 and was directed by Raja Gosnell (you can get more info on that version here). Gosnell has also directed many other family friendly hits like Home Alone 3, Beverly Hill Chihuahua, and The Smurfs. The live action movie cast included Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, and Rowan Atkinson.

The plot followed the same basic outline of the original series, but was expanded upon in order to fill an entire two hours of crime solving. The Mystery Inc gang had reunited after having gone separate ways for two years, only to meet back up at a horror resort where they were forced to fight supernatural crime once again, consisting of evil demonic forces. Throughout the film, the gang become trapped in different bodies, but eventually solve the crime by working together as a team.

Following the blockbuster success of Scooby Doo: The Movie, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed was released in 2004.

Fans are hopeful that the new movie will be as good as Scooby-Doo: The Movie, which is arguably the better movie between the two live action films that have been made.

The New Movie

The new Scooby-Doo movie, also known, according to IMDB.com as Scoob is set to hit theatres on May 15, 2020. The new movie is said to feature other Hanna-Barbera characters who recruit Scooby-Doo to find an enchanted collar in order to stop a ghost attack.

Scoob features a star-studded cast with Zac Efron as Fred, Amanda Seyfried as Daphne, Will Forte as Shaggy, and Gina Rodriguez as Velma. Frank Welker, who has been the voice of Scooby-Doo since the original 1960s cartoon will return to voice the great dane.

Matthew Lillard, who has voiced Shaggy since 2002 will not be returning to theatres with this revival of the characters and he made sure to let everyone on Twitter know that he was not happy with the decision. Lillard wrote on Twitter after the new cast was announced, “Well this sucks. What a crappy way to find out…thanks Hollywood. You never cease to amaze me.”

The new movie is set to be directed by Tony Cervone, who directed a few of the animated TV series reboots. The new film will be produced by Chris Columbus, Pam Coats, and Allison Abbate. The film is said to be an animated film, as opposed to live action like the previous two times that the world’s favorite crime sniffing dog has hit the big screen.

With this film being the first film about Scoob and the gang in 14 years, there are high stakes for this film to do well. Parents will be taking their children and enjoying the nostalgia of it all, while young children will hopefully become new fans of these characters.

At this time, not too much information has been released as far as the plot of the new Scooby-Doo movie; however, now that the cast has been officially announced, the film can begin production. This means that we are all one step closer to being able to go see Scoob! In theatres. Because the film is being directed by a veteran, Tony Cervone, it can also be expected that the film will remain true to the original Scooby-Doo style and basic plot outline and structure. The internet is already going crazy over the cast (in a good way), so the expectations are high.
