Mexico is a beautiful country that is connected and intertwined with thousands of different roads. Of course, many of them are up to standards and safe, but some of them are very dangerous and you should avoid them at all costs.

Right now, the safest method of transportation around the world is with airplanes. Most people do not believe this, but it is a simple fact and it is true. Well, airplanes are the safest method, driving motorcycles is the most dangerous one. After motorcycles, cars are the second most dangerous. This shows us just how many times exactly we put ourselves in danger almost every day. Society is based on being a part of the traffic in these modern days which makes it normal for most of us.

However, this does not mean that we should give up entirely on driving on the ground. We have to accept the responsibility of these machines that way well over a ton and the dangers of traffic. Once we finally accept this fact, this information, only then we can start progressing to a safer society. This is very important, especially if we want our children to live in a better world.

In this article, I want to focus on the dangerous roads and highways in Mexico, especially this year. Mexico is not exactly a unique case of all the countries around the world, but I do find their roads quite interesting which is the reason why I decided to pick Mexico.

Coatzacoalcos – Villahermosa

Closer to the northern border and Guatemala is a highway that stretches for about 100 miles or 166 km. That does not sound like a lot because it is not a lot, objectively. Unfortunately, for some reason, this is a place where a lot of accidents happen. Just a few years ago, more than 200 accidents were reported between the port city Coatzacoalcos and Villahermosa. Both of these cities are quite major and big which means the path connecting these two is well-made.

We are talking about a freeway and not about some random dirt road. There is no exact reason why there are so many accidents here, but I can assume that the reason is that the distance between the two cities is very short. Since the distance is so short, people are probably trying to reach the city in the quickest way possible. This usually means going over the speed limit. Most people are probably driving well over 100 mph to reach Coatzacoalcos or Villahermosa in under an hour.

Keep in mind, this is just an assumption and it may not be true. But, we cannot ignore the fact that more than 20 people have lost their lives here in just one year.

Another short route, but a very dangerous one. This one is between the city known as Santiago de Queretaro and Leon. The distance between these two is under 200 km or a hundred and 25 miles. Again, it does not seem like a lot because it is not. But, unfortunately, for some places, even 50 km is too much.

Wherever you are headed to in Mexico, you will probably end up driving down this route that connects these two cities. Because if you want to get to Mexico City which is the capital, you will have to pass right next to Queretaro.

While most of the time the path will be fine and the cement will be marked properly, you will end up on a certain part of the road that will be a bit underdeveloped. This is the place where most of the accidents happen because it has been left unmarked and it is probably still in development after a couple of decades.

The reason behind this is the fact that the entire Bajio area started advancing too fast for its own good. The connections between most cities in this area were still not made while the volume of traffic is constantly increasing. More and more vehicles are driving to this area, making it a very dangerous place to be during peak traffic.

Espinazo del Diablo or The Devil’s Backbone

Just by reading the name of this world, I think you can realize that it can be both very dangerous and very scary even for the best drivers. This one is a mountain road and of course, every path for vehicles in the mountains are more dangerous than others. Sharp turns, big drop-offs, and other problems make the drive a little bit more uncomfortable. But, the Espinazo del Diablo is more than just uncomfortable.

I would not recommend going here and trying to drive through this location, so I suggest you open up Google maps or any other map application and see for yourself. Assuming as much as you can and you will be amazed by the fact of just how sharp turns on this world are. What makes things even more interesting is the fact that vehicles are often met with a lot of rain. There also is not any kind of railing on the signs which means even one slightest mistake could lead to death. Combine that with the fact that you will be 1500 m above sea level, it really is a dangerous place and probably the most dangerous road in the entire country.

Since this road goes through/over a mountain, drivers are very frequently met with all kinds of animals from the wilderness. They can jump out in front of the vehicle at any time. The risk is simply too big to go anywhere near this path. Only the bravest or the most stubborn ones are willing to drive through the spine of the devil.

Keep in mind, Mexico is still a great country and most of its roads are in pristine shape. You should not let these three examples give you an idea of how the country treats its people and its visitors.

Luckily, for retirees, Mexico makes it easy to come and live without having to jump through too many bureaucratic hoops. There are different visas, though, so you need to know the right one.

If you are planning to come down to do a sort of dry run to see if you would like living there, then a tourist visa is for you. It allows you to stay up to six months which is enough time to judge whether Mexico is actually the right fit or not.

If you do decide to live there, then you will need a temporary resident visa which lasts four years. Before you leave the US you should go to your local consulate to apply as there are some requirements to qualify. For instance, you will need to show a certain amount of income that comes from outside of Mexico. This can be income from a retirement fund or if you work remotely and have a steady income from that.

Once you have been there for four years, you can then apply for a permanent visa so you don’t have to keep reapplying for a temporary one every four years. Once again, you will need to show that you have a minimum amount of money coming in and a certain amount of savings to qualify. Though you technically can get by with only knowing English, your life will be much easier if you learn at least some basic Spanish. Relying on locals to speak English can cause some problems especially when you are dealing with paperwork. And hiring a translator can be costly.

If you can speak some Spanish then you can navigate much easier and even integrate in Mexico instead of only having ex-pat friends.

It can also be something that gives you something to do. Learning another language is something that keeps your mind sharp so you are less likely to have a deterioration of your facilities as you age. Learning keeps us young so there is an extra incentive to learn the language as a retirement challenge.

Get a side hustle

This is one that may be in a grey area when it comes to your visa. Make sure that you are allowed to work without any issues as some visas are strict about you not taking a job from a local.

Since you are now a local, you can do things like help tourists that are visiting the region. As you speak English and have insider knowledge, then you could find yourself doing well working a few hours per week leading some food tours or something similar.

If you are not allowed to do that, then you can always do it online. Start a Youtube channel that focuses on this area and have it link to your own website. Then sell e-books as guides for the area. Mexican Brewer Puts a Stop to Corona Production

The Mexican brewer responsible for producing Corona beer suspended the production because of the global pandemic of COVID-19. At the same time, the Grupo Modelo stated that the decision was based on the Government’s opinion of their business as non-essential. Corona beer, as well as the other brands like Modelo and Pacifico, are exported to 180 different countries in the world.

There have been many prominent actors and actresses of the previous century that have helped lay down the foundation of Hollywood and brought it to the standards that it is known for today. One of the actresses of the previous century who really took the golden screen by storm was Katy Jurado. Born Maria Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado Garcia, she preferred to call herself only as Katy Jurado. She was one of the top Mexican actresses and acted in film, television and theater.

Unlike many other Hollywood actresses who mainly moved to Los Angeles to pursue their acting careers, Jurado started off her acting career in the neighboring country of Mexico. She received quite a bit of fame during the 1940s and the 50s, in a decade that came to be known as the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. It wasn’t long before she was discovered American film products and was cast into Hollywood, catapulting her fame to new heights.

Early Beginnings

Katy Jurado was born on the 16th of January, in 1924 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. She was the daughter of Luis Jurado Ochoa, a lawyer by profession. Her mother, Vicenta Garcia, was a singer. She had two younger brothers, Luis Raul and Oscar Sergio. Her mother worked at the famous Mexican radio station known as XEW, which is also the oldest radio station in all of Latin America.

Her earlier studies were at a school run by nuns in the Guadalupe neighborhood in Mexico City. She had no desire to pursue acting, and began to study as a bilingual secretary. However, it wasn’t long before her ravishing beauty and charming looks were discovered by famous Mexican filmmakers. Among them was one Emilio Fernandez. He would go on to offer her a role in a film that would change her life.

Her first role, directed by Fernandez, was in the Isle of Passion. The movie was released in 1941. Her parents were strictly against acting, and never gave consent to her pursuing it. However, her acting in The Isle of Passion caught the eye of other directors, and another filmmaker, Mauricio de la Serna, offered her a role in his film No Mataras just a couple of years later.

The contract was presented before her, and she signed it without the consent of her parents. When she told them what she had done, they threatened her to send her to a boarding school far off in Monterrey. This was around the same time she met an ambitious actor by the name of Victor Velazquez. The two hit it off, and they tied the knot soon after.

She later accepted that the primary reason for marrying Velazquez was because it allowed her the freedom to pursue work in the filmmaking industry and to escape from her parents. The marriage was never going to last long, and the two decided to part ways in 1943. Velazquez was the father to two of her kids, Sandra and Victor Hugo.

Over the course of the next seven years, Jurado would go on to do big things. She ended up doing 16 films in this timeframe, acting alongside prominent Mexican film stars like Sara Montiel, Pedro Armendariz, and Pedro Infante. In 1953, she was noticed internationally for her performance in El Bruto. For her performance in the movie, she received the Ariel Award for the Best Supporting Actress. The Ariel Award is the direct equivalent of the Academy Award in Mexico.

Break into Hollywood

Her big break in Hollywood came when she was working as a movie journalist and a bull fighting critic to support her family. Prominent Hollywood actor John Wayne spotted her at a bull fighting event. At the time, Wayne didn’t even know that she was already an actress in her hometown.

But, Budd Boetticher did, and he cast her in his movie alongside Gilbert Roland in 1951. The film was entitled Bullfighter and the Lady, and her performance as the wife of an aging matador received a lot of praises. She didn’t know much English at the time, and would only memorize the lines phonetically so she could deliver a convincing performance.

This got her noticed by Stanley Kramer, one of the major producers in Hollywood. She was cast in the classic movie High Noon alongside Grace Kelly and Gary Cooper. Eventually, she had to learn to speak English in order to play the role, and did so by taking classes daily.  She also played a role in Arrowhead, which was released in 1953.

By 1959, she had several Hollywood credits to her name, and had worked on many major films and television plays. Some famous movies that she acted in include Trial, The Racers, the Dragon Wells Massacre, The Man from Rio, Trapeze, Broken Lance, and various others.

Jurado was also close friends with a certain Marlon Brando, who eventually invited her to take part in One-Eyed Jacks. She had met Ernest Borgnine in 1958, and the two married soon after, eventually starting their own production company.

In 1963 however, the two decided to end their marriage.  She returned back to Mexico and started living in Cuernavaca. A couple of years later, she would return to Hollywood to play a role in Smoky.

For a large part of her career, Jurado would continue alternating between Mexico and Hollywood. She shared a very close and romantic relationship with novelist Louis L’Amour, and stated in an interview that he had written her love letters until the last days of his life. For her contributions to Hollywood, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Towards the end of her career, she began suffering from health problems, primarily related to her lungs and her heart. Eventually, in 2002, after a long and successful career in both Mexican cinema and Hollywood, she passed away in her home in Cuernavaca due to pulmonary disease and kidney failure. She is widely regarded as one of the best actresses to come out of Mexico.

Mexico Refuses to Pay for the Wall

Donald Trump has the idea of building a wall between the US and Mexican border, and he wants Mexico to pay for it. However, their southern neighbor will “never” pay for the wall which separates the two countries, according to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Nieto tweeted to Donald Trump, and he said that nobody wants to pay for the wall. Here is the Tweet: “President @realDonaldTrump: NO. Mexico will NEVER pay for a wall. Not now, not ever.

Sincerely, Mexico (all of us).”

Even though Mexico strongly opposes such ideas, which is more than reasonable and understandable, Trump is confident that they will do it eventually. POTUS addressed the crowd at a rally yesterday saying that the neighbors would foot the bill for a border wall, which according to Trump should reduce illegal immigration drastically.

Another problem that might be solved is the traffic of illegal substances that according to the US government representatives, are mostly coming through this country. While this approach might not completely stop these activities, it would certainly make it a lot harder for smugglers to transport their goods.

This was not the first time Nieto was grossed by such idea. The problem between the two leaders is recurring, and Nieto delayed his visit to White House as he was arguing about the wall with Washington officials. Trump, who promised the wall and who said that Mexicans would pay for it, still has to find a way to take the money from the southern neighbors. Will he succeed in his intentions? Something tells me that this quarrel will go on for as long Trump is at the seat of power. Who knows what might be his next move.
