Humanity has not been the same since the beginning of time. We are getting new technologies; new inventions and our lives are becoming better every day. There are many famous people who put their own touch into the development of technology and medicine and they forever changed our lives.

Many lives throughout history were dedicated to science and advancing human knowledge. In their honor, here’s a list of the most famous inventions which contributed to living in a world like the one we have today.

Printing Press


The printing press enabled humanity to spread the written word faster than ever. Reproduction of text and images using a template started way back in 220 AD in China and was done using cloth instead of paper. The Diamond Sutra, which is a Buddhist book from Dunhuang, is said to be one of the oldest printed books, dating back to 868 A.D.

In Europe, in the 15th Century, the first printing press was created by Johannes Gutenberg а German goldsmith and is known as the Gutenberg press.


Although electricity is a physical phenomenon and can’t be invented – it’s discovery is one of the most important ones in human history. Alessandro Volta was one of the first scientists who made a substantial effort in utilizing it. In the year 1800, he invented the first battery by combining alternating discs of zinc and copper, which were separated with layers of cardboard soaked in salt water.

This battery, also known as the voltaic pile, conducted electricity when a copper wire was connected at either end. A not very well-known fact is that the light the copper wire emitted when conducting electricity is considered to be one of the first versions of the incandescent lightning we have today.

In 1887 Tesla created the first induction motor which worked on alternating current, creating a new chapter in power engineering.


The invention of vaccines comes after a long history of infectious disease in humans and many attempts at healing those diseases. History shows that the Chinese used smallpox inoculation as early as 1000CE, it is evident that this was practiced in Turkey and Africa as well, long before it spread to the Americas and Europe.

Edward Jenner is the name of the first vaccine inventor who used the cowpox material to create immunity to smallpox back in 1796. Further work on his method enabled the eradication of smallpox 200 years after the invention of his vaccine.

Nowadays the vaccines are given to children in order to prevent 14 different diseases that occur early in life.

Personal Computers

We can all agree on the importance of computers and we should thank the inventor of transistors for that -William Shockley. The first processor was manufactured by Intel in 1971 and consisted of 2,250 transistors. Not many years after the first processor in 1975, Ed Roberts coined the term “personal computer” when putting the Altair 8800 on the market.

The Refrigerator

“Let’s keep it cool” – is what I would have said if I invented the Refrigerator. But it was constructed by Jacob Perkins in 1834 based on the theory put forward by Oliver Evans. The fridge consists of a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump which takes the heat from the fridge and transfers it in the external surroundings.

When it comes to the first-ever electric fridge, it was invented and manufactured by General Electric in 1927 and cost $520, which equals to 7000$ today! This expensive device was called “Monitor-Top” and had a funny-looking compressor on top of the unit which apparently looked much like the gun turret on the Civil War battleship USS Monitor.

The Clock

Humans have been measuring time by tracking the sun with sundials, used water clocks, candle clocks, incense clocks and hourglasses for over millennia. When it comes to mechanical clocks the first mechanical clock was made and designed by Yi Xing of China in 725 AD.

Life as we know it would have no sense without a device that measures time.

Nowadays, in the digital era, we are facing different problems such as The Year 2038 problem (also called Y2038 or Unix Y2K). This problem relates to representing time in many digital systems as the number of seconds passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. Storing time as a signed 32-bit integer,  cannot encode times after 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038.


Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the first visionaries who believed that even though humans aren’t designed to fly, they were destined to fly. The Wright brothers saw this dream come to life, as they said: “The airplane stays up because it doesn’t have the time to fall.”

Behind this funny quote lie many tests and aerodynamic calculations which made it all possible. Back when the Wright brothers constructed the first airplane the calculations showed that it would take 4 days of flying for a plane to go from New York to Paris and they deemed it impossible.

Today we have around 100,000 flights every day, with millions of passengers coming and going from places all over the world.

The internet

We can’t say that one person invented the internet, it was a result of the work of many pioneering scientists, programmers, and engineers. Each of them developed new features and technologies that eventually joined together in becoming one – the “information superhighway”. It all started in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET – Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, funded by the US government. This was the first network that used packet switching enabling more computers to transfer files on one network.

The world we know wasn’t built in a day. Humanity walked the path starting from learning how to measure time, how to decrease mortality by using vaccines, how to power whole cities with electric energy, to finally arrive at the modern age where you can do anything and be anything just by starting up your PC and connecting to the internet.

Are billionaires Amancio Ortega and James Richman planning on saving stranded Thomas Cook travelers?


Thomas Cook has recently gone bust causing around 150,000 passengers globally being stranded in their dream holidays.

The world’s oldest tour operators went under overnight after several failed attempts to agree on a rescue deal with its lenders, shareholders, and the UK government.

There are multiple setbacks for the present condition of the company, on top of which is a 1.6 billion-pound debt pile from a decade ago.

Over 21,000 likely to be out of jobs

Since Thomas Cook has a bigger client base and has worked with many other subsidiary airlines, its demise has created a problem even bigger than that of Monarch Airlines which affected around 110,000 customers in October 2017.

As the company shuts down its operations overnight, 21,000 jobs are placed in danger globally whilst around 9,000 jobs are affected in the UK. It has also triggered the biggest ever peacetime repatriation aimed at bringing more than 150,000 British holidaymakers home.

Stranded passengers are currently faced with piling issues. Several of the holidaymakers have contacted their respective UK Embassies from different regions as some were reportedly demanded to pay up large sums of monies from hotels and other service providers whose financial obligations were not met by the busted tour operator. Bills were seen running into thousands of pounds in some cases.

Repatriation plans for the next two weeks

The UK Civil Aviation Authority is running its repatriation operation to bring Thomas Cook passengers back to the UK for the next two weeks until 6 October. After which, stranded travelers will have to make their own necessary travel arrangements.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told the Telegraph that dozens of charter planes are being dispatched across the world to fly back customers. However, he cautioned that “there are bound to be problems and delays”. The said effort will be covered by the British government and its taxpayers.

Billionaires and their lending hands

Meanwhile, secretive billionaire Zara founder Amancio Ortega and financier James Richman are rumored to be looking into lending their private planes to help bring the stranded holidaymakers home.

Both Ortega and Richman are known for being immensely private making it difficult to get detailed information about the rescue plan. In 2002, Bloomberg noted that the Spanish billionaire has only granted interviews to three journalists. Meanwhile, Richman is Latvian-born reclusive financier whose camp, along with Chinese investors, were reportedly have been in talks with Thomas Cook in a bid to save the company from its current demise.

While the planes are mainly accustomed to accommodating a small number of passengers, the planned help from billionaires can make way for emergency repatriation cases.

According to reports, an emergency coalition of private jets from these secretive billionaires are planned to be on high alert to rescue Thomas Cook customers in case the planned repatriation by the tour operator fails.

The billionaires and their representatives were not immediately available for comment on this story. However, the word is out that the private planes to be sent by Ortega, Richman, and other billionaires are likely to give priority to stranded passengers who need health-related and other emergency repatriations.

12. Concorde

Concorde is one of the most recognizable airliners ever, and for a very good reason. This was one of the first supersonic passenger aircraft and the only one of two in service. Concorde was a real pioneer of the supersonic jet travel and was retired in 2003. Since then, no other supersonic airliners in commercial service appeared something that could remain forever.

The Boeing 747 has to be the most recognizable airliner in the world. The real “Jumbo Jet” is the original “giant airliner”. The plane was revealed during the 1960s when the Concorde was taking shape. It is one of the reasons why the supersonic jet did not become mainstream. Air travel became about transporting the most possible, and the 747 did it superbly while the passengers traveled in a new definition of comfort. One downside is the 8 hours it needs from the UK to the US, while the Concorde only took 2 and a half.

10. Lockheed Tristar

This is one of the most innovative aircraft of its time, and it looks familiar to the Douglas DC-10. The DC-10 sold great, but it was hampered by issues that resulted in crashes. The Tristar was far more advanced, and better aircraft overall. The Tristar also served air forces, especially the RAF. Despite almost killing its creator, it was an astonishing machine.

There is nothing that groundbreaking about this airplane. Nothing is special about the looks, nor is it faster or slower than other jet airliners. However, it has great versatility. This is one of the most popular airliners everywhere, for passengers and airlines alike. As a perfect short-medium range airliner, the only rival it has is the Airbus A320 jet, the only real answer to the 737.

8. DE Haviland Comet 4

This plane was the first jet airliner in the world, and the most troubled. The first version had tons of issues, resulting in devastating crashes. An entire fleet of them was grounded following this. Then, the Comet 4 came out and was what the original Comet should have been from the start. By then, however, it was left behind a bit, pity as it is a great airliner.

7. Airbus A380

This airliner has had a troubled existence during a short lifespan, before going out of production. The airlines simply did not place orders. The 747 was the more popular, and the A380 was a struggle to sell. In addition, there are much cheaper airliners, which could be bought in larger numbers than a few of these. Emirates are a huge customer of this aircraft, and they saw the potential of Airbus. Sadly though, other companies did not.ž

6. Vickers VC-10

This is another unique airliner, as it has four jet engines on the tailfin instead of under the wings. The speed was what made it truly special. In its time, it was the fastest airliner in the world and held the record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean the fastest. Only the Concorde could match the VC-10 in the London to New York race. The VC-10 has retired only a few years ago, and several even served the RAF as tanker planes.

5. Boeing 787 Dreamliner

The 787 Dreamliner is one of the latest and also the greatest aircraft on the long list of Boeing planes. It is perhaps the best of the whole modern generation of their airliners. The beautiful flicked wings give it a lot of lift, while the economy and capacity easily rival whatever Airbus has to offer. The 787 is 20% more efficient than the 767, and it has noise-reducing chevrons on the engines, making it one of the quietest airliners currently on the market.

4. Bristol Britannia

The plane was known as the whispering giant, one of the most ground-breaking airliners when it comes to turboprop design. It was immensely popular with both the crews and passengers. The outside noise from the plane was surprisingly quiet, while a very smooth nature made it comfortable even though the inside noise was somewhat loud passengers. The age caught up quickly with the jet when it comes to commercial use, but the RAF uses it as a transporter.

3. Boeing 777

Like the 737, the 777 is a very versatile aircraft from the famous company. The first flight took place in 1994 and the aircraft has stayed in production ever since, developed into the ultimate version called the 777X. This plane is the most produced wide-body jet by Boeing and is easily one of their bestselling models. The airliner is very fuel efficient, comfortable, and fast, as well as incredibly nice and easy for the pilots to fly. It shares some of the design features with the 787 Dreamliner.

2. Lockheed Super Constellation

This beautifully named airliner is usually regarded as one of the classics, and a legendary airliner all over the world, mostly for the gorgeous looks. That isn’t all though. This was Lockheed’s response to the Douglas DC-6 airliner, dubbed the “super Connie,” and it saw service in commercial and arm fleets throughout the world. It was a comfortable aircraft to fly in, with a great range to rival the Douglas DC-6. It was also larger. The Super Constellation and the original Constellation are some of the most recognizable airliners in history.

1. Vickers Viscount

This is one of the pioneers of turboprop airliners that never caught on as much as it should and could have. It appeared when jet aircraft took center stage. Still, it became one of the most profitable and successful transport aircraft after the war, with exactly 445 built for customers around the globe. The plane was famous for its quietness and a comfortable cabin. The last Viscount in any service retired in January of 2009.
