MTV has recently announced that the acting heavyweight will be gifted with the “Generation” Award at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Award ceremony.
Johnson has previously hosted this show in 2016 alongside his friend and “Central Intelligence” co-star Kevin Hart. The “Generation” Award is awarded to “beloved actors whose diverse contributions to both film and television have turned them into household names in the industry” as it is stated by the MTV. Actors who have won this honor in the past include Chris Pratt, Reese Witherspoon, Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr, Sandra Bullock, Mark Wahlberg, Jamie Foxx, Johnny Depp, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey and the entire franchise of “Fast & Furious” movies.
Amy Doyle, the general manager of MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo, had this to say about this occasion:
“Johnson is an icon in both film and TV who has become one of the most beloved actors of our generation. Throughout his career, Johnson has proven to be the ultimate badass – an action star with a flair for comedy, one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time and a true family man. He continues to captivate his audience worldwide and we are thrilled to celebrate him with the Generation Award.”
MTV has also revealed earlier in the week that Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of fellow actor Will Smith, will also be honored. She will receive the “Trailblazer” Award at the ceremony, hosted by the “Shazam!” star, actor Zachary Levi.
Regarding other nominees, “RBG,” “Game of Thrones” and “Avengers: Endgame” have received the most nominations for this year, each scoring four.
There are also several new categories which will debut at the 2019 awards, like the Reality Royalty, Most Meme-able Moment, and Best Real-Life Hero.
When it comes to musical performances, MTV has so far revealed that Lizzo will take the stage, as well as the singer, songwriter and producer Bazzi, with his song “Paradise.”
