Dr. Boyce Watkins’ Early Life
He was born on June 20, 1971, in Louisville, Kentucky. His mother Robin Couch was a teen mother, and his father left them soon after he was born. But when Boyce was three years old, his mother married Larry Watkins, a young Vietnam veteran from Louisville.
When Boyce was in school, he was in a special education class, because his teachers thought that he wasn’t smart enough to go to college. In school, he was the captain of the school’s track team. And he used to work in many restaurants, like Taco Bell.

He managed to get a small scholarship from a group called “Black Achievers” and it paid for his tuition fees for the University of Kentucky. While he was at college, at his freshman year, his girlfriend gave birth to their child, during a winter break.

When he was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky, he started to involve in political activism. He wrote in his campus newspaper “The Kentucky Kernel” about the racism that he faced. He published his first book on a similar topic, a guide for the minority students, in 2004.
When he was the faculty affiliate at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, he advocated for the rights of college athletes. NCAA refused to compensate the college athletes, so he challenged them.

One more thing that he did was that he wrote a letter together with Russell Simmons to President Barack Obama to put an end to Ronald Reagan’s War on drugs. He managed to gather more than 175 signatures from celebrities, scholars, activist and business leaders. He also criticized “the most racist commercial in history” from the soft drink company Mountain Dew.
To this day he is very active on so many social media sites, where he discusses the social issues of America. He founded many websites like “Yourblackworld.net” and “FinancialJuneteenth.com”.

When he was in college, the Wall Street Journal stated that he was the “Outstanding Graduating Senior” in finance. He is considered to be one of the founding fathers in Financial Activism. When he got his Ph.D. in Finance, in 2002, he was the only African American to earn it in the world.
