United States President, Donald Trump is going to meet Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. The two leaders are going to see each other in Washington and Buhari is the first leader from Africa who will be hosted by President Trump.
The talks will be about economic and security interests of the two countries, but they will also be under scrutiny for another reason. At one occasion, Trump has used a foul word to describe African nations, and it will be interesting to see the direction in which the meeting will go. POTUS denied making the comment after which he was accused of being racist, which he also dismissed as false.
Most likely, the two leaders will not address these rumors, and they will talk about more pressing issues, according to BBC’s Nigeria correspondent Mayeni Jones. Nigeria is under a constant threat from Boko Haram jihadists who are located in the north-eastern part of Nigeria, but President Buhari is facing the mounting unrest in the middle belt as well. Combating terrorism will, therefore, be the primary topic for Trump and Buhari. Nigeria’s government has purchased 12 counterinsurgency aircraft for $496 million in order to remove Boko Haram threat.
They are also going to look for different ways to improve the economic relations between the two countries. Buhari is said to be a corrupted leader, but he is seeking re-election in 2019. At this meeting with Trump, he will try to convince him as someone who advocates democracy, and after Trump, Buhari will meet companies which specialize in agriculture. Furthermore, the Nigerian leader will talk business with several US transport companies.
